Chemo Hat Pattern

Earlier this month, when I had posted my chemo hats, there was some interest in the pattern I had used. Well, I finally wrote up the pattern, and it is now available on my blog. I will add a link to my sidebar so that it is always available. Please let me know if you find any problems with the pattern, and I will happily edit it.

Frugal Preemie Crochet Caps to Philippine Hospital

I am so happy to share the preemie caps I crocheted, thanks to many who shared their pattern/sites. I will send them to the NICU of the Philippine General Hospital( PGH) in honor of my preemie daughter's foundling. The PGH NICU took care of her while she was intubated for a month at 1.5 kilos at birth.

There were no preemie bonnets, nor pretty clothes then. The small sized disposable diapers came up to her chest. All she had was a thin cotton hospital-issued blanket.

The caps are frugal because I got the whole skein from Salvation Army for a dollar. The skein was perfect, though, a combo of baby blue and baby pink.

Cheers!

Been a while

I haven't posted here in forever, but that doesn't mean I haven't been making and sending projects. I've sent many projects to Marine Corps Kids. Here are a few:

First Finish for 2008

Hi, it's been far too long since I posted. I didn't meet my goal of 25 things in 2007 (hangs head in shame). Having a baby kind of ate into my knitting time for a while, but now we are in that magical land of routine and we are good to go.

These little socks still need the ends woven in, but are destined for my local public hospital which makes sure that all babies born go home with warm clothes.

Cover Up

Another charity delivery was made today: 18 receiving blankets and 23 burp cloths. The items are cotton on one side and flannel on the other, and I took them to Abba's House, a pregnancy center in my area. I am slowly finding the bottom of some of my amassed flannel and cotton stash. It is so hard to resist fabric that is in the remnant bin or marked down to $1 a yard. Sometimes, I even purchase flannel sheet sets during the spring clearance sales to be used for the receiving blankets. The sheets and pillowcases provide a lot of yardage.

Baby Pack Shipment

The items are packed and ready to be mailed to the Baby Pack coordinator tomorrow.

I posted a photo of the sweaters before, but now they have accompanying socks and/or hats. It was a lot of fun making the items for this charity.

It warms my heart to know that my humble efforts will be helping children halfway around the world. It adds meaning to the line from an old song, "Let there be Peace on Earth, and let it begin with me."

Item #1

Last year I fell short of 25 Things for Charity by 2 or 3 items. It was an crazy year last year personally with a very difficult pregnancy. This year my goal is to make it to 25. Here's my start. It is a pattern from CareWear. This bereavement gown will be donated to the Emmazing Grace Foundation. It is the 501(c)3 non-profit that I began after the premature birth and death of my second child, Emma Grace. If you would like to donate, please let me know. We donate bereavement gowns, memory boxes, and NICU items to various hospitals in need.

Need a Buffalo Area Charity Crafter

Paula with the Buffalo News sent me this e-mail:

I am a reporter at the Buffalo News, planning to write a story on donating things for charitable causes. I saw the 25 things site on line and am trying to find a Buffalo connection. The only one that came up was "Wormie" who donates things to Roswell Park Cancer Institute here (but doesn't live here.) Could you put up a request for anyone from the Buffalo area to be in touch with me? Also, would like to get in touch with Wormie.

My e-mail is pvoell [at] buffnews.com or 716-849-4457.

I'll be speaking to Paula as well. Hope you guys can help her find someone.

5 Chemo Hats

With the new year, I am going to try and post over here more consistently. I actually managed to make 104 items for charity last year, but I lost track of what I posted over here, so I just stopped posting. But I will try to do better this year. Anyway, I have made 5 chemo hats that will be donated tomorrow to the Danbury Hospital through my crochet guild.

A New Member

Hello to Amanda!!!

Amanda, I have sent you an invite. Please post and tell us something about your charity crafting projects.

Crochet Preemie Cap Patterns

Hello. I have crocheted a couple of squares and blankets for charity. But if you have a favorite preemie cap pattern you would like to share, please send it (or through the comments) to me so I may get started and donate to our local NICU.

Many thanks!

14 hats completed for Johns Hopkins NICU

These are the last 8 hats that I finished up (just under the wire for Christmas) for the 20 Hats Project. I'm pleased to report that I presented the Chief of Neonatology at Johns Hopkins with 21 hats made by five different women!

My grand total for 2007 was:
14 preemie hats (given to Johns Hopkins NICU)
4 scarves for the ASIS&T silent auction
3 chemo hats (given to UNC Cancer Center)
3 child's hats (given to my church)
1 Snuggles Project blanket
1 square for Warm up America (to add to the 6 already upstairs)

That comes to a total of 26 items knit for charity in 2007!

One of my New Years goals this year was to knit two hats a month (on average) for the 20 Hats Project. I also have some acrylic that I'll be using for at least one - maybe 2 - Snuggles blankets.

Hello Again

Hi, this is Jessica again.......I just wanted to update you on some more afghans I have made, and packaged to give away.

Operation Bag Of Home

Hi everyone,

Wanted to spread the word about a new project that is the result of some cooperation between two groups...Homespun Helpers and a livejournal community called militarylove.

Working together with one of the mods from the military community, we have created a project called Operation Bag of Home. The idea is that little 3x5 (or so) bags can be crafted and then sent to point people who will stuff them with little things like wet ones, hand sanitizer, gatorade, things like that. People who have contacts overseas will send boxes of these little stuffed bags over to men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan.

If you are interested in joining us in this endeavor by crafting bags (or anything else, but since this community is filled with amazing crafters I thought I'd start there) check out http://community.livejournal.com/operationboh/profile.

Thank you!
